"From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more." John 6:66 "Have you ever heard the phrase 'lost in the moment'? It's easy to get lost in the moment and make a foolish decision or, due to peer pressure, do something we will always regret. The 'moment' is one of the hardest places to live. When you are faced with a decision ;in the moment,' it really comes down to two options: Will the next second of your life represent Christ and His character, or will it represent the world and its downfall?" "Living for Christ moment by moment can be one of the hardest things to accomplish in your life, but it is what true followers of Christ do. Anyone can life for Christ at church, during a Bible study, at a camp or retreat, or even when you are with all your Christian friends. What about when that is all gone, though? When everyone is looking at you, expecting you just drop the 'God thing' and join in their fun? Those moments are when a true follower of Christ is defined." "John 6 speaks about how Jesus is the Bread of Life. All of His followers are given a challenge in verses 53-59. The result of this challenge was that some of His disciples said in verse 60, 'This is a hard saying; who can understand it?' Then in verse 66, 'From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.'" "There was a moment when following Jesus was 'cool' or 'accepted'. But when push came to shove and the disciples had to make a decision, they quit. I wonder how many of you are like the disciples and in the moment quit following Jesus! Have you stopped having faith that God can move mountains? Galatians 3:3 asks, 'Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?' How do you answer that question? Have you stopped following and trusting in your Lord because of the moment you are in? I challenge you today to follow Jesus moment by moment and never give up on Him!" -- Brian Mills (a friend of mine and youth minister at Longhollow Baptist Church in Na Rules, Rules and more Rules. Our lives seem to revolve around what we can and cannot do. Youth group is the same. Here are the top 10 actual, for-real youth group rules as compiled by Group Magazine. 10. Shirts must remain on at all times during youth group AND adult services. 9. No swim covers on Sunday morning -- they do not "count" as a dress. 8. Fireworks may not be lit off as a grand finale to lessons. 7. No New piercing of any body parts during youth group hours. 6. No tractor races after youth group. 5. Skunk hunting is not longer allowed on retreats. 4. No playing tag on the roof of the church. 3. All spike collars must be removed before game time. 2. No hitting, kicking or biting leaders. And the #1 rule found in youth ministry!!!!!!! 1. NO pranking the senior pastor. Hope you enjoy and welcome to the school year!!! -- Richard Group Magazine printed these results from Lifeway Research in which they interviewed 1,000 Protestant pastors and another 4,000 Protestant churchgoers. Here is what they found on six different points:
1. BIBLE ENGAGEMENT While most churchgoers like to think of themselves as biblically engaged people, most of them don't practice habits that line up with that view. Almost all (90%) say they "desire to please and honor Jesus in all I do." but many fewer (59%) say they "find myself thinking about biblical truths" through out the day, and even fewer (19%) say they read the Bible every day. The study found that the higher the engagement, the deeper the growth. 2. OBEYING GOD AND DENYING SELF "The 'obeying God and denying self' attribute does not measure a specific list of sins to avoid," says Scott McConnell. "Rather, it gauges whether an individual has an obedient posture. When it comes to obedience, spiritually mature disciples of Christ have a loving motivation to obey God, the self-awareness to know they must be proactive to avoid bad decisions, and the humility to confess sins they commit." Two-thirds of survey respondents (64%) agree that "a Christian must learn to deny himself/herself in order to serve Christ." 3. SERVING GOD AND OTHERS More than half (60%) of regular churchgoers say they "intentionally try to serve people outside my church who have tangible needs, but only a scant few (9%) strongly agree with this statement: "I intentionally give up certain purchases so I can use that money for others." Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research, says "Service doesn't just happen in a church. It must be modeled and encouraged." 4. SHARING CHRIST While four out of five churchgoers (80%) believe they're responsible to share their faith, more than half (61%) have not taken that risk with a non-believer in the last six months, and half (48%) have not invited an unchurched person to church. 5. EXERCISING FAITH Faith is the most exercised "muscle" in a growing believer's spiritual fitness regimen. More than four out of five churchgoers (86%) say they "express praise and gratitude to God even in difficult circumstances." 6. SEEKING GOD The survey found that three-quarters of churchgoers (73%) set aside time outside of church for prayer, and a little over half (54%) plan times to worship God, at least a few times a week. Four out of five (78%) say "one of the main reasons I live my life the way I do is to please and honor God." Where do we fall? -- Richard Good afternoon!! We are almost 24 hours in and all is well. We hope that everyone had a wonderful worship service this morning!! We arrived at around 2:30pm, got room keys, T-shirts and pictures taken. All of the youth got their afternoon track times set and we headed to dinner. Dinner consisted of pizza, Alfredo Penne pasta, baked chicken, salmon, asparagus, broccoli, drinks, salad, rolls and banana fruit pudding. Evening service was spent in Colossians 1:15-18 followed by church Bible study time and Night Life. Games were played and fun was had. Everyone hit the sack at a good time and seems more rested today. The rooms have worked out well with only one small issue that was easily and quickly corrected!! Please continue to pray for God to do a mighty work in each of the youth Do you look around ... at what others have, school grades or maybe just the world in general and think or say .. "Well that is not fair!!" What exactly is fair? For some it is an even playing field for everyone or the rules are set the same for all. Maybe for some of us we have worked hard at something and someone else gets the credit. Or even more so, someone else has something that we don't. All of these things and some that I have not mentioned cause us to feel like life just isn't fair. But as the question above asks. "WHO SAID LIFE WOULD BE FAIR?" Where exactly is that written? If you ever want to know what unfair looks like in the Bible, turn to the Book of Job. This book starts out talking about our buddy Job. Verse one says he was "blameless, upright, fearing God and turning from evil." I am sure that describes all of us as we complain about things being fair!! But what did Job have? Well according to the Bible Job had 7 sons, 3 daughters, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and many servants. "That man (Job) was the greatest of all the men of the east." Job even went so far as to offer up offerings to God every time his kids had a party just incase they made God mad. Good guy. Before the first chapter is over and in just one day Job lost everything! I don't mean he lost his possessions ... he lost everything ... kids and all. In chapter two Job loses his health. So in 35 verses Job went from having everything to having nothing except his wife (who basically told him to curse God and die) and three "friends". Job could honestly say that this wasn't fair. Over the next 39 chapters he converses with his friends and questions God. But never did he blame God for what had happened. Do we? At the end of the book, because of Job's faithfulness to God, he was rewarded. God blessed him with 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 female donkeys. Job had 7 sons and 3 daughters. Life isn't fair and it isn't going to be fair. How we handle ourselves in the midst of the "unfairness" and how we focus on God is the ultimate test during those times. So whenever you feel life just isn't giving you a fair shake ... just remember Job and how he still loved and worshiped God no matter what happened Had one of those nights? Can't sleep? Maybe it is a major test coming up. Maybe it is a big decision that you have to make. Maybe you drank too many sodas. Whatever the reason is .... here I am. Awake at 1:31am. What are some of the things you do when you can't sleep? Do you pray? Read the Bible? Play games on your phone, computer, i-Pad or other electronic device? What are some things that you do to help yourself go to sleep? Let me know!! Comments are open and the floor is yours!! Here is a top 9 list of excuses (yes these are real as reported by several youth leaders) that parents have used for not letting their kids go on a trip. Which is the best? You be the judge. 9. "The late-night activities are past my child's bedtime." 8. "My child is constipated." 7. "We are vegetarians." 6. "We just saw the rule about not being able to bring alcohol and tobacco products." 5. "My daughter's small group leader freaks her out-- she's too calm and nice." 4. "My son just found out he is afraid of nature." 3. "I don't trust religious people." 2. "There is no tornado plan in the information you sent." And the number one reason ... of all time ... of excuses parents have used to not let their kids go on a trip ... is..... 1. "A LION ESCAPED FROM THE ZOO!!" Our thanks to Group Magazine for this list!! Enjoy and feel free to give ones that are better.... |
